CHAPTER NEWS

What's going on in local North Dakota SkillsUSA chapters?  Find out here....

Sheyenne Valley Area Career & Technology Center (posted 1-17-06)

The SkillsUSA chapter at Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Technology Center in Valley City recently presented an Internet Café/Instructional Session to the members of the North Dakota Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary at its Mid-Winter Conference held in Jamestown, ND on January 6th and 7th.

Veterans and Auxiliary Members were shown the unique features of Tablet PCs equipped with wireless internet access.  SkillsUSA member Darin Carlsrud, a senior at Maple Valley Oriska High School, showed attendees how to surf the web and check their email.  Darin also took pictures of the events at the Conference and showed attendees how to download and display pictures from a digital camera on their computers.

Our chapter recently gave a presentation on wireless security to the ND State Legislature.  12 members of the SVACTC chapter were involved with the presentation.  The students made wireless directional antennas out of Pringles potato chip cans.  They then conducted a wireless survey of Valley City by “wardriving” through area neighborhoods.  By doing this they discovered 88 wireless access points of which only 32 were secured.

Additionally, our Chapter carried out a community service project for the children of HHC 141st  Engineers out of Valley City.  The chapter, with support from the VFW, Lions and area businesses, put on a Christmas party for the children of soldiers deployed out of the 141st.
